Daliya (Broken Wheat) Dal Khichdi

When you are bored of a regular masala khichdi and want to try a variety and yet not to compromise on health here is the right combination to include in your weekly menu.

Delicious Wholesome Meal - DalKhichdi has a combination of rice and broken wheat (daliya) and a variety of daal (toor dal, split green moong dal, yellow moong dal, chana dal)



Time to prepare : 25 Minutes
Serves : 4

Ingredients :


  • 1.5 cup of Mix Dal (toor dal, split green moong dal, yellow moong dal, chana dal)
  • 1/2 cup of Broken Wheat (Daliya) 
  • 1/2 cup of Rice (Basmati or Kolam) or any regular rice you use 
  • 1/2 tbspn of turmeric powder 
  • 1 tbspn of red chilli powder 
  • 1 tbspn of coriander cumin powder 
  • 7-8 green chilis 
  • 2 dry red chilis 
  • 7-8 cloves of garlic 
  • few pieces of ginger (around 8-10) 
  • 2 cinnamon stick 
  • 3-4 cloves 
  • few curry leaves 
  • 2 tbspn of ghee 
  • 1/2 cup of oil (we may use less) 
  • 1 tbspn of mustard seeds 
  • 1 tbspn of cumin seeds 
  • 1/2 tbspn methi seeds 
  • 1 onion diced 
  • 1 tomato diced 
  • Salt to taste


How to prepare :

  • Wash and Soak dal, rice, daliya in a container for 1/2 an hour 
  • Dice Onion, Tomatoes
  • Chop Ginger, Garlic, Chilis into small pieces (note we have to make tadka twice so we have to use now and few later)
  • Take a pressure cooker and add some oil , add mustard seeds , cumin seeds, ginger, chilli, garlic, cloves, cinnamon and saute. Once they spluttter add onions, tomatoes and saute again. 
  • Add all the spices mix well and add the soaked rice, daliya and dal alongwith some water. 
  • Add salt and mix well
  • Pressure Cook for 4-5 whistles or till done. 
  • Once done let the pressure settle on it its own and then open the lid 
  • Add some water (about 1/2 a glass) and mix khichdi with spatula or wooden spoon and let it simmer on a slow flame
  • In another pan take some oil and ghee add methi seeds, mustard seeds, ginger, garlic , green chilis , red chilis, curry leaves and a tspn of red chili powder. Let the garlic get little brownish and you can feel the fragrance. 
  • Add in the tadka to the Khichdi and mix well. 
  • Serve hot with Curd, Pickle and a dollop of ghee 
Note : 
  • You may reduce the quanity of ginger, garlic, chilis if you dont want it much spicy. 
  • Have the quanity of dal more than rice and it will be tastier. 
  • You may add dals of your choice too.
